Identifying your Favourite Brands

To discover who you are as a brand, we first need to get to grips with what makes you, YOU. To do this, we’re going to need to go away and create a really clear, visual picture of all the products and brands that you feel represent you, that you gravitate towards, and that you feel a connection to.

Okay. So we're about to start on the first exercise of the brand discovery program. This is a fun one. First of all, we're going to explore the brands that you personally like to consume. We all have them. We all have products, items that we enjoy. Now this could be; food, fashion, beauty, cars, travel, leisure.

We all have a list of those. And the first task that I want you to do as part of this program, is go on to Pinterest and start to pin yours. Now, I know I'm throwing you straight in, so I'm going to give you a real live example of my personal brands that I love,  and let's see if you can notice any connection to the BEESPACE brand, because this process is so interesting because when we look at the brands that we, as individuals like to consume, there's always a common thread.

And right now in the brand discovery process, it's so important that we acknowledge what that common thread is, because this is going to feed into what we work on later on.

So everyone, I thought what might be interesting is  to show you the brands that I've collected on my brand board. And to see if straight away you can stop to see any type of similarities. So everything on here, all of these brands, which I'm going to talk you guys through. I absolutely love and use on a day-to-day basis. So here we go.

A bit of Vivienne Westwood, love a bit of Viv! Definitely my go-to on the premium designer brands. All saints, which is my kind of everyday stuff that I wear.  Also got, Girl Club Design there, which are the really cool logo tees. I really like that brand because  I like what she's about. She's very kind of disruptive. And it's fun and ironic and  yeah, I really appreciate it.  What else have we got? Oh, Doc Martins. So many pairs of these. I mean, you can't go wrong can you really with a pair of Docs?  Box Park. I guess for me, Box Park's always been like that kind of muse as it were, in terms of branding and design and visual.

When we were doing the Beespace  brand development, one of my things is that I wanted to be able to have a logo that could be stamped on the side of a shipping container, like at Box Park.  So that's why the Beespace logo is quite simple really. What else have we got? Ah, Berlin, one of my favorite places I've ever been to, it's like super duper cool. My Tampax products, feminine hygiene products that I have at home.  Toilet roll as well.

If you don't know this brand, this is really cool brand. They donate a lot to charity and everything's natural.  One of my favorite bands ever, the Arctic monkeys. I love them. And actually their album AM was definitely a big inspiration for the Beespace brand development. Electric Evoke, I have one of those coming.

I do like a Range Rover.  Little bit of graffiti and street art there again from Berlin. Ah one of my favorite jewelry brands, which is the great frog. This is very kind of like rock and roll looking chunky, silver, biker style jewelry, which I absolutely love.  My perfume Chanel. My favorite food shop, which is Marks & Spencers.

Oh, this is a good one. So this brand is gorgeous. This is urban Apothercary. I have these candles and reed diffusers at home and they smell really musky and beautiful. Ahh yeah, and raised in the future. So this is Mere Souer,  she's an Instagram mum that I followed for years, like six years since having Indie. I've got all of her stuff and she was one of the first kind of the rise of the Instagram moms into independence, I think.

And I really like what she's about and what she stands for, this is actually a picture of her and her little boy from many moons ago. So yeah, I've got that t-shirt. So these are all of the brands that I really love and enjoy and consume. Oh! Apple, of course. Mac, this is my everyday makeup brand that I wear. Oh, and this here, this is Anthony Burrill who is also this person.

So he's a graphic design artist and I just absolutely love what he's about. The way he applies graphics to buildings. It just completely, utterly, does it for me. So yeah, these are all the brands that, you know, I consume daily. I love. They make my heart sing. Yeah, they're really  do it for me. So I hope that that kind of helps when you're thinking about what brands that you can need to pin.

So now I've introduced you to all my favorite brands. Just take a moment and, you know, can you see any kind of crossover and similarity between them? And I think actually it's pretty obvious, isn't it? Everything's on the darker side, which, you know, Beespace definitely is. It's very bold, disruptive.

It's kind of cool and edgy. Hopefully you can, you can get a real strong sense of that  when you look at my brands.

Find Your Common Thread

Print out your favourite brands mood board and take a good look at what you have created. Do you notice a common thread that runs between the things you are drawn to? Is there a certain mood, colour, genre, or theme that keeps cropping up?

Make notes of those common threads and similarities - just like my example attached below. And keep these common threads in your mind when it comes to narrowing down the direction of your brand later on in the programme.
